چکیده

ABSTRACT Supermassive black hole binaries are driven to merger by dynamical friction, loss-cone scattering of individual stars, disc migration, and gravitational wave emission. Two main formation scenarios expected. Binaries that form in gas-poor galactic environments do not experience migration likely enter the wave-dominated phase with roughly isotropic spin orientations. Comparatively, evolve gas-rich might prominent phases accretion, where Bardeen–Petterson effect acts align spins holes orbital angular momentum disc. However, if accretion breaks, alignment is expected be strongly suppressed – a phenomenon was recently shown occur large portion parameter space. In this paper, we develop semi-analytical model joint gas-driven supermassive taking into account impact breaking for first time. Our predicts occurrence distinct subpopulations depending on efficiency alignment. This implies future observations merging could potentially used (i) discriminate between hosts (ii) constrain dynamics warped discs.

Supermassive Black Hole Binaries as Galactic Blenders

This paper focuses on the dynamical implications of close supermassive black hole binaries both as an example of resonant phase mixing and as a potential explanation of inversions and other anomalous features observed in the luminosity profiles of some elliptical galaxies. The presence of a binary comprised of black holes executing nearly periodic orbits leads to the possibility of a broad reso...

Jet disc coupling in black hole binaries

In the last decade multi-wavelength observations have demonstrated the importance of jets in the energy output of accreting black hole binaries. The observed correlations between the presence of a jet and the state of the accretion flow provide important information on the coupling between accretion and ejection processes. After a brief review of the properties of black hole binaries, I illustr...

Collapse of a Rotating Supermassive Star to a Supermassive Black Hole: Analytic Determination of the Black Hole Mass and Spin

The collapse of a uniformaly rotating, supermassive star (SMS) to a supermassive black hole (SMBH) has been followed recently by means of hydrodynamic simulations in full general relativity. The initial SMS of arbitrary mass M in these simulations rotates uniformly at the mass–shedding limit and is marginally unstable to radial collapse. The final black hole mass and spin have been determined t...

The Effect of Orbital Eccentricity on Gravitational Wave Background Radiation from Supermassive Black Hole Binaries

A compact binary on an eccentric orbit radiates gravitational waves (GWs) at all integer harmonics of its orbital frequency. In this study, we investigate the effect of orbital eccentricity on expected gravitational background radiation (GWBR) from supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries in galaxy nuclei. For this purpose, we formulate the power spectrum of GWBR from cosmological evolving eccen...

The spin-flip phenomenon in supermassive black hole binary mergers

Massive merging black holes will be the primary sources of powerful gravitational waves at low frequency, and will permit to test General Relativity with candidate galaxies close to a binary black hole merger. In this paper we identify the typical mass ratio of the two black holes but then show that the distance when gravitational radiation becomes the dominant dissipative effect (over dynamica...
